The Winstanley School Open Hands Appeal 2017

Students have been collecting much needed food and toiletries for the charity Open Hands. Each tutor Group has made a hamper of items which will be given to a family in need or to homeless people over the Christmas period. Students have put a lot of thought into the items they have included and their generosity has been amazing.

We collected over 20 boxes of food which were collected on the 15th December, the project has been co-ordinated by Mrs Boyce our Religious Studies teacher. The project has been jointly run with Bosworth Academy and students from both schools have visited the charity to understand the difference these hampers will make to people in need.

Career Mark Renewal 2017

Having been re-awarded the coveted Career Mark in 2017 in recognition of outstanding support in careers guidance and advice, Bosworth Academy students continue to benefit from world class support in careers planning. We successfully went through revalidation of the award which we achieved for the first time in 2015.

The process was rigorous and involved interviews with a wide range of students as well as with the Careers leader Mrs Marie Delage-Martin. “As a school we strongly value careers education, and employability skills are firmly embedded into the curriculum”, says Mrs Delage-Martin, “we have very good links with the UK top universities and working relationships with many of the regions best employers”.

We are delighted that the quality of Careers Education and Guidance we deliver at the Academy has been once again recognised by a prestigious external organisation.

Tour De Leicestershire 2017

Bosworth Academy Staff Team to Ride in the Open Hands Tour De Leicestershire on Saturday 9th September

Bosworth Academy are again teaming up with Leicester based charity Open Hands for the 4th year in a row to raise money in a sponsored cycle event on Saturday 9th September. The Tour De Leicestershire is a non-competitive sportive cycle ride, which begins at Bosworth Academy and circumnavigates Leicestershire visiting a variety of villages including Mountsorrel, Gumley, Husbands Bosworth and Cosby. There are a choice of two routes – 80 miles and 56 miles. The ride will be fully signed, with drinks and food provided en-route and a BBQ at the finish.

Open Hands is a charity based in the city which provides food, furniture, clothes, care, support and counselling to the most vulnerable and needy people in Leicester and Leicestershire. All the money from the entry fee (except the £1 to British Cycling) goes directly to Open Hands and some teams and individuals choose to raise money through sponsorship as well.

For the first time, there will be a prize for the Organisation/Club/Business which cycles the most cumulative miles. The event is supported by Velobici Cyclewear, High5 Sports Nutrition and the Rapid Relief Team Charity. Dave Bennett, Deputy Head at Bosworth said: ‘Bosworth Academy is proud to be associated with the work of Open Hands. They do a great work supporting people in our city and county. We are hoping to get a large number of staff, students and parents involved this year – it will be brilliant to support Open Hands and have the enjoyment of getting fit as well.’

We are always looking for more riders. Why not enter a team? If you want more details or want to enter, visit the Open Hands Website.

Progress 8

Progress 8

What Progress 8 means and how it relates to Bosworth Academy

The new school performance measurement
The government has introduced a new measurement designed to encourage all schools to offer a broad and balanced curriculum at Key Stage 4, and reward schools for the teaching of all their pupils. The new measure call Progress 8 will be based on students’ progress measured across eight subjects: English; mathematics; three other English Baccalaureate (EBacc) subjects (sciences, computer science, geography, history and languages); and three further subjects, which can be from the range of EBacc subjects, or can be any other approved, high-value arts, academic, or vocational qualification.

Bosworth Academy’s performance
Not surprisingly Bosworth Academy has achieved a ‘significantly higher than average’ Progress 8 score for 2016 as the school already offers the rich, varied, and balanced curriculum that benefit all our students.

This recent article in the Leicester Mercury highlights the schools in Leicester City and Leicestershire and their relevant Progress 8 scores. Leicester Mercury: Top schools in the city and county revealed at GCSE [link]

As well as achieving excellent attainment figures for the vast range of GCSE subjects at Bosworth Academy, the first release of Progress 8 measures the Academy as one of the leading schools in the region.

Progress 8 aims to capture the progress a pupil makes from the end of primary school to the end of secondary school. It is a type of value added measure, which means that pupils’ results are compared to the actual achievements of other pupils with the same prior attainment.

As stated, the measure is designed to encourage schools to offer a broad and balanced curriculum with a focus on an academic core at Key Stage 4, and reward schools for the teaching of all their pupils, measuring performance across 8 qualifications. Every increase in every grade a pupil achieves will increase the progress measure.

We are pleased to report that Bosworth Academy achieved a Progress 8 = +0.32
(National average Progress 8 = 0.0)

This means that on average students at Bosworth Academy achieved at least 3 grades higher than the national average. Our Progress 8 classed as being ‘significantly higher than average’.

View this 3 minute video produced by the Department of Education, for a further explanation of Progress 8, and for more details and other measures please look at Gov.uk where you can check performance tables in more detail.
